Dublin's Olympia Theatre

Tagged:  •    •    •

Dublin's famous Olympia Theatre has been the site of many amazing shows over the years, and this, according to R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills, is one of the primary reasons why the band chose the venue for its upcoming working rehearsals.

“From the Waterboys to Lou Reed. I am thrilled to play at this wonderful venue, and in front of some of the best fans in the world,” Mills says.

The Olympia, located on Dame Street, was built in 1879 and was initially named the Star of Erin Music Hall. It was renamed Dan Lowrey's Music Hall in 1881. After going through reconstruction in 1892, the building was demolished and rebuilt in 1897 as the Olympia Theatre.

We're starting to feel the excitement for the Dublin shows! :)

A shame that the entrance canopy (as on the fabulous tickets) was demolished by a truck..

Heya, I've got tickets for row c of the reserved seating.. does anyone know how far this is from the stage.. is there an area for people standing in front of this?
Just a little curious..

Here's a link to ticketmaster's seating chart for the Olympia.

Since I have to pick up my tickets there, I have no idea of which seats I'll have, but this looks like a pretty tiny venue, so all should be good, I think.

Can't wait!

you will have no problems seeing REM clearly at the Olympia. It really is tiny. I'd be surprised if it hold any more than 1,500 people

in such a tiny venue I'd love to take my camera with me!!!
is it allowed?

doubt you'll be able to take your camera in, they're tight on that these days (because it's now so easy to upload vids to the internet through youtube), and especially as this is show casing there new material...

but of course I am only guessing, for all I know they'll be selling disposable cameras with Michael Stipes head on outside the Olympia..

I had heard cameras weren't allowed, but was slightly hopeful when it said there was a place to upload your photos here. I guess we'll have to wait and hear what happens to those going on Saturday.

anyone know how many standing tickets were sold?

Hi guys, i'm still looking for a ticket for the 4th, I can either pay for this outright or swap it for a standing ticket for the 3rd. Anyone....!?

a touristy question: this is my first time in Ireland. where would be a good place to spend the night? Any dubliners or experienced travelers have a tip? I'd like something close to the venue...

Hi.

After many long hours of hunting I found the best rates on the Dublin Tourism site www.visitdublin.com. Places in the city centre are generally quite pricey, if you're heading further out public tansport's excellent so aim for somewhere within easy reach of a bus route or the Luas (tram).

Have a great time, it's a fabulous city!

Hi Mia,

if you're interested in hostel accommodation Avalon House is good and near Temple Bar, also go to www.hostelworld.com
Hotels will set you back at least £160, www.lastminute.com or try the Temple Bar Hotel...I'm staying at the Fitzwilliam Hotel in Temple Bar, it will set you back around £170 for the night though!!!
Meg
