Postcard from dublin (2000-Dec-Reveal)
Well the record is just about finished, with final mixing and sequencing winding down. This is a fun part of the process, where the band, Pat, and Jamie listen, discuss, absorb, and change--all with the goal of making the record ebb and flow in the best way possible. Last night, several sequences were tried out, tossed aside, and rejiggered, and the process will continue for a few more days. Then it will be time for Pat to master the entire disc, and everyone will break for the holidays before re-convening for the January trip to South America.
It is difficult to describe in words the sound of this record, but I'll stick with my original thoughts of "lush, atmospheric, and melodic." After repeated listenings I would add things like "layered" and "dynamic." But I should just quit this futile effort and say I think you'll enjoy it in a few months--likely an April or May release.
The guys have thoroughly enjoyed making this record. We worked on it in three primary segments--early summer in Vancouver, summer turning to fall in Dublin, and the month of November in Miami. All along the way, there were stops in Athens for certain bits of recording. All in all, a great year for R.E.M., doing what Michael, Peter, and Mike most enjoy--making records with good friends--and we now can't wait til it comes out.
Happy December!
Bertis
